ANDREA MACDONALD: MORE THAN A TEACHER
Andrea MacDonald is a relatively new part-time faculty member at NSCC Ivany Campus. Having taught a public relations course in the business administration program last year, she now teaches a media literacy course on campus. However, her talents and passions extend beyond the classroom.
As a University of King’s College journalism graduate, it should come as no surprise that MacDonald enjoys writing and finds creative writing a great outlet. She is passionate about words, writes stories for young people, and helps people improve their writing skills.
MacDonald always loved language and knew she wanted to write for a living. Her background in journalism led her to work for The Daily News for nearly 14 years after graduating from college. But the metro-area newspaper closed its door back in 2008.
After a stint working as a communications advisor for the minister of national defense, MacDonald started a writing, editing, and PR consulting company called World House Communications in 2014. “This allows me to provide freelance communications services to a wide range of clients while teaching part-time,” said MacDonald. “I love the variety and have even completed two web writing projects for NSCC.”
MacDonald is also passionate about raising awareness of several food allergies. “My 11–year–old daughter is allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, and sesame so I do what I can to raise awareness for roughly 500,000 Canadian kids in her shoes,” she said. She does this through her writing or through her volunteer work with Food Allergy Canada.
Originally from the Pictou County area, MacDonald also runs a food allergy support and information group. With a plethora of professional development courses in everything from speech writing to entrepreneurship, it’s clear that MacDonald’s mantra is lifelong learning.
